Shortwave Diathermy (SWD)

Advanced Deep Heat Therapy for Pain Relief & Tissue Healing

Shortwave Diathermy (SWD) is an advanced electrotherapy modality that uses high-frequency electromagnetic energy to generate deep heat within body tissues. The treatment helps reduce pain, improve circulation, decrease muscle spasm, and accelerate soft tissue healing by delivering therapeutic heat deep into muscles and joints.

Shortwave Diathermy is a physiotherapy treatment that uses high-frequency electromagnetic waves to produce therapeutic deep heating in body tissues. The electromagnetic energy passes through the tissues and creates heat by causing ions within the tissues to move and generate friction. Unlike superficial heat therapies, SWD can heat deeper tissues such as muscles, joints, ligaments, and connective tissues.

  • Reduces pain and inflammation
  • Improves blood circulation
  • Relaxes muscles and reduces spasms
  • Increases tissue extensibility
  • Improves joint mobility
  • Accelerates soft tissue healing
  • Reduces stiffness
  • Enhances recovery in chronic conditions
  • Provides deep therapeutic heating
  • Supports rehabilitation programs

1. Continuous Shortwave Diathermy (CSWD): Provides continuous electromagnetic energy and produces stronger thermal effects. Best for chronic pain, joint stiffness, muscle tightness, chronic inflammatory conditions, and improving circulation.

2. Pulsed Shortwave Diathermy (PSWD): Delivers electromagnetic energy in pulses with reduced heating effects. Best for acute injuries, pain management, swelling control, soft tissue healing, and conditions requiring non-thermal effects.

Electrode Placement Methods: 1. Contra Planar Method (Electrodes opposite each other; best for smaller joints, localized treatment, deep penetration). 2. Coplanar Method (Electrodes side-by-side on the same surface; best for large treatment areas, back pain, broad muscle regions).

  • Osteoarthritis
  • Arthritis
  • Frozen Shoulder

Yes. SWD is safe when performed by trained physiotherapists using appropriate treatment protocols. However, it may not be recommended for:

  • Pacemakers
  • Metal implants
  • Pregnancy
  • Active infection
  • Cancer
  • Severe cardiac conditions
  • Open wounds
  • Impaired thermal sensation
  • Severe edema
  • Recent radiotherapy
  • Tuberculosis
